Cleaning Up After Home Flooding

Home flooding can be a major problem.  Water soaks into carpets and padding, seeps through wood flooring and even damages drywall.  If left alone the damage will become even more severe, affecting the structural integrity of your home as well as causing major health issues to anyone in the house if Mold spores begin to grow and spread.  Eventually, Hazmat suits and equipment will be needed before entering the home to prevent exposure to the dangerous spores.  Luckily, not all occurrences of home flooding are that serious.  In most cases, if you act fast you can minimize and prevent damage to your home and belongings.

Act Quickly to Save Belongings

With home flooding, time is your enemy.  The longer the water sits the more damage it will do to your home.  Any items that aren’t able to be cleaned and dried within 24 hours of exposure to flood waters should be thrown away as they run the risk of bacteria growth which will spread throughout your home.  That’s why its important to elevate any items that you can to table tops or counters.  In some cases, elevating items such as furniture just a few inches off the floor is enough to prevent water damage.  Also be sure to remove any electronics from the affected areas.  Once you have removed all items that are able to be removed, you should call a professional water restoration company.

Water damage to Carpet

One of the most common types of damage from flooding comes from water damage to carpeting.  Unlike hard surfaces, carpet, and the padding under it soak up water, which can be very hard to remove.  In most cases professionals can salvage your carpeting by drying and disinfecting it before re-installing it.  However, the carpet padding is not able to be cleaned, and must be replaced in order to prevent the growth of Mold.  The good thing is that carpet padding isn’t very expensive at all, and in most cases can be removed and replaced in the same day.  Superior Cleaning offers water damage cleanup as well as carpet and flooring installation and repair.  This means that you don’t have to find another contractor to come and install new padding or carpeting after a flood.  Once we’ve cleaned up the water damage, we can install new padding, carpeting and even hardwood flooring.

Drying Everything Out

Once the water has been extracted, you must then begin the drying process.  Drying smaller items is easy, especially in the warmer seasons when you can let them dry outside.  However, drying the interior of a house or building can be much more difficult.  Air circulation is one of the most important factors in the drying process.  At Superior Cleaning we use high powered fans and air movers, as well as industrial dehumidifiers to dry the area as fast as possible.  If called early enough, we can prevent any permanent damage to the structure of your home or property.
